What a Full View Door Is
Instead of solid steel or wood panels, each section of the door is a thin frame holding glass or a clear panel. The frame is usually aluminum, finished in black, bronze, silver or a custom color.
These doors show up on new modern builds and on houses that have turned the garage into a gym, workshop or studio. They also suit some breweries, restaurants and shops that want to open a whole wall to a patio.
Glass Choices
The glass changes the look, the privacy and the safety of the door. Common options include:
- Clear glass for the most light and the most open look
- Frosted or satin glass that lets light in but hides the clutter
- Tinted glass in gray or bronze to cut glare
- Tempered safety glass, which breaks into small pieces instead of sharp shards
- Insulated double pane units for a garage you heat or cool
Some doors use clear plastic panels instead of glass. They weigh less and resist breaking, but can scratch and yellow over time.
Heat, Cold and Our Summers
A single layer of glass does little to stop heat. A west facing glass door can turn a Durham garage into an oven by late afternoon in July.
If the garage is part of your living space, ask about insulated glass, a thermally broken frame and low E coatings.

Privacy and Security
Clear glass shows everything inside, day and night. Frosted glass solves most of that. For a shop or business, laminated glass holds together when struck, which helps against break ins.
Weight and Wind
Glass doors are heavy for their size, so they need springs matched to the real weight and a strong opener.
New doors carry a label showing their wind rating, and North Carolina's code applies wind load rules to garage doors. Ask what rating the installer will order for your house.

Upkeep
Aluminum doesn't rust, but the glass needs washing, especially after pine pollen season. Check the seals between the panels and the frame now and then. A cracked panel can usually be replaced on its own.
Price
